Irish honor for Billy Briggs

HAMILTON – Irish unity supporter and local pub owner Billy Briggs received an award declaring him an “Irish Patriot” from Sinn Fein vice president Pat Doherty this morning. Briggs, who has previously hosted Doherty and Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams at Tir Na Nog, on Hamilton Avenue said the award was the greatest honor of his life. His wife Maggie O’Donnell-Briggs and 6-year-old daughters Mairead and Eleen O’Donnell-Briggs posed for pictures as dozens of friends celebrated with them. Afterwards, Briggs took out his trademark banjo and played traditional folksongs with two bandmates as the crowd sang and clapped along.
